 Manatee Woman Awarded $22 Million for Medical Malpractice
In Manatee, Florida, a county jury found for plaintiff Kyrra Casey, 31, in a medical malpractice lawsuit . Casey was admitted to the hospital and diagnosed correctly with sickle cell crisis. Dr. Sanford E. Elton ordered some tests the next morning, however he never asked for, nor was given, the results of the test. Casey's condition worsened, yet attending doctors failed to take necessary steps to aid her. She went into respiratory distress and suffered brain damage, leaving the former Presidential Scholar functioning at a 10 -year-old mental level. Casey will not get the exact amount of the jury award, as she settled with the insurance company before the announcement.

 $1.1 Million Awarded in Failure to Diagnose Cancer Medical Malpractice Lawsuit
A Grand Rapids man alleged that his physician failed to properly care for him after an exam revealed a risk of prostate cancer. After his attorney filed a medical malpractice lawsuit against the doctor for failure to diagnose prostate cancer, the jury awarded the victim and his wife $1.1 million.

 Mississippi Attorney to Challenge Medical Malpractice Law
Walter Thompson, a Mississippi attorney, plans to challenge the state's new medical malpractice reform law on the grounds that it violates the rights of nursing home residents. He claims that the new law unfairly restricts the amount of pain and suffering damages that can be awarded. Thompson cites the federal Nursing Home Reform Act of 1987 and points out that any state law regarding nursing homes is pre-empted by federal law.
